Pre-Pub's Complementary Guide to Online Marketing

Build your brand, not your budget

There are two main ways to market your books or services online, SEM and SEO.

SEM

SEM is Search Engine Marketing which allows you to pay to place your ads alongside search engine results when specific words are searched for. SEM, when carried out properly, can be a cost effective way to reach your target audience and generate responses.

5 Steps to successful Search Engine Marketing

  • Keyword selection
  • Target ideal positions
  • Refine your keyword bids
  • Optimise your ad copy
  • Monitor against click fraud

Did you know?

When advertising on Google Adwords, you can lower your average cost-per-click (CPC) by improving your click-through-rates (CTR) because it raises your Quality Score?

Did you know?

Negative matches can be as important as keywords if unrelated searches are returning your ad and reducing efficiency.

Did you know?

You can check for potential click-fraud by isolating keywords that are driving the unusual increases in costs. Compare these across search engines to see if they are legitimate. Spam traffic can be diagnosed by IP addresses, activity time stamping, visit frequencies and regional information.

SEO

SEO is Search Engine Optimisation which is the process of designing, writing and coding your site so it will be ranked well by search engines for your chosen keywords. SEO is a far more complicated art to master than SEM but it has the potential for greater rewards and has no ongoing costs.

5 Steps to successful Search Engine Optimisation

  • Identify the most relevant popular and niche search phrases used by your target market
  • Ensure your site architecture is search engine friendly
  • Increase your incoming links and develop link building strategies
  • Optimise your content with effective content. That doesn’t mean it is just well written but that it is written in a way search engines will recognise and give you a higher rating
  • Ensure that your site is submitted manually to all major search engines

Did you know?

You should only link with sites that are relevant to yours. Other links will do little to help and using link farms can actually harm your rating!

Did you know?

Some major search engines ignore part or all of your meta tags when indexing your site.
