pre-pub readers vent their spleen

From strange novels to moody authors and unscrupulous wholesalers there is always something to infuriate us in the book trade. Whatever it is make sure you let us know so we can compile our lists and tell those that matter what you think.

Making me sea-sick

David Hasselhoff's autobiography has been receiving coverage left, right and centre this month. Not content with regailing us with his anecdotes of starring in two of the most successful ever television shows, 'The Hoff', is quick to claim credit for bringing down the Berlin Wall and state that Princess Diana had "a thing for him".

"She was smitten with me since I was so tall. I was smitten with her since she was so tall. But she was married and so was I. I probably would have gone after her if circumstances had been different. In the end, I just wanted to be a friend and to hang out with her."

The former Knight Rider star's autobiography is easy to mock for the self important and self congratulatory twaddle it contains. However it is by no means the most nausiating example to surface in recent years.

Eamonn Holmes is surely by far the worst culprit. His autobiography 'This is My Life' managed to paint the pompous, Irish, T.V. presenter as, well, a pompous Irish T.V. presenter. Wild exadurations about his 'friendship' with Sir Alex Ferguson and efforts to play down his diva-esque tantrums at GMTV have made Holmes such a figure of fun that quotes from his book were being regularly e-mailed out to amuse Guardian readers. Hasselhoff may be bad, but as far as I know he never hid behind a small child to shield himself from 'Fathers For Justice' campaigners. Shame on you Eamonn.

May I suggest a new genre for future efforts of this sort - the egobiography.
